Action Arts
Facing History and Ourselves and Beacon Academy partnered to present Action Arts - Positive Change through Artistic Action,
a ten-week program developed by master artist Chandra Dieppa
Ortiz. Ms. Ortiz worked with students to deepen their understanding of
history, social justice, and the difficult decisions people make
everyday when they are faced with the challenge of taking a stand in
their personal lives and in their communities.
Students created art that illustrates the connection between the
individual, the community, and positive social action. The art produced during this project will
be on display at the Boston Public Library from January through May
2008 as a companion exhibition to Choosing
to Participate.
In July of 2007, ten Boston Public School students immersed themselves in the Facing History and Ourselves’ Digital Legacies Project, a
four-week digital filmmaking program focused on the Civil Rights
Movement in Boston. During the Digital Legacies Project, the students developed short documentaries about Boston residents
who have been champions for civil rights.
The student-produced films include interviews with local civil rights activists and explore their involvement in the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's.

These films will be highlighted at the Boston Public Library on March 5, 2008.
